-How, when, when, when etc?

We are going to have to be way more strict about taking time off if showing any signs of symptoms so book cover within the SM team will need to be really though about. Obviously this is very tricky during tech as the onstage stage managers often have loads to do and are having loads of new things thrown at them so does there need to be a time in previews or after opening night scheduled for going through the book and stage set up?

I think extra scheduled time for going through the book would be great. I know this is often treated with great intention and gets pushed as other needs arise. But adding it to standard schedules from now on could really help.

Could we use some technology for this too?

If possible, shadowing of book/calling over comms during a preview or show. May only be possible for bigger shows with not much SM work on stage. And where there is not disturbance to audience.

If not a disturbance to the audience would it be possible to record the calling of the show? Would need a bit of set up. Ideally would have video of the stage and the book, but wouldn't have to be cinema quality.

@sineadcormack think recording the SM calling the show is a great idea- ideally this can be done quite easily through the comms system. Perhaps in venues without comms system a simple mic can be set up for the SM. Shows would need to filmed as well so that if SM calls in sick, there is a video and recording of the show in the venue with the book so either the other SM can step up or another SM can come in watch the show with the book and hear it being called. Think that this is something to be discussed with venues as this would be great if that was a permanent feature in every venue as opposed to something new that would need to be rigged for every get in

Generally on gigs I've worked on that have book cover, this is done after opening night because previews like techs are too busy for the department. However if someone were to fall sick before this, there would be a problem. The ideal situation would be to have an SM swing that can shadow all members of the SM team during tech and previews

@sophie-flynn Yeah think a swing member for Tech would be great for budgets that allowed it otherwise the recording might be a good alternative

And making time for SM's to go through the book post opening night a mandatory thing as well

A swing tech with SM experience may just be one of those things that will have to be insisted upon (and budgeted for) from now on.
